AboutThe sheep that roam this wilderness have wandered for an age, Scribe Records was originally founded at the height of the 1970s Irish folk revival by my Dad, Charlie Piggott, and was named after our address at the time (and the name of my childhood home) Mountscribe. In itself, this is the anglicised form of the Irish, Muine Scriobach, which can be literally translated as 'weather-beaten scrubland', but in reality has a lot more poetry to it. Scriobach carries the connotation of the land being scored or scribed by wandering animals that have worn tracks and furrows into the land. This was picked up by the poet Moya Canon in her beautiful poem Scriob, and subsequently inspired me to write the song Old Mountscribe. When I began recording and publishing music, I was looking for a name to distribute under, and my Dad mentioned that he had known about the magic of the scriobach all along and had set up a label / publishing house which I was welcome to re-establish... so here we are today!
